If you want to achieve success, you have to be able to empower yourself. It’s a non-negotiable and no one is going to freely do it for you. Lucky for you, I have picked 3 incredible tips and tricks that will help you get empowered today!
Last summer I dreamt about starting a business, a brand, that focused on loving and celebrating women. I decided to turn this dream into a reality at the beginning of this year by opening up an earring business called Mixed in Beautiful.
Not only did my earring business give me an outlet for my artistic passions, but I decided early on that Mixed in Beautiful was also going to be an avenue for me to empower women. I mean, I’ve always loved jewelry and felt even more ready to take on the day when I had cute, unique jewelry on to top off my outfits. I wanted to help other women feel that same sense of empowerment through my jewelry.
But I felt like I was called to do even more to spread our message. I’ve always been good at writing and inspiring people through my words. I wanted to use these talents to love on and support even more women.
What better way to do this than a blog?
And since this is an empowerment blog, I couldn’t think of a better way to begin than equipping you with three easy and surefire ways that you can start empowering yourself today.
Today, we’re talking all about how to empower yourself today.
How To Empower Yourself
1. Start your day by getting dressed
Have you ever noticed that when your outfit is on point, you feel better about yourself? By getting dressed at the start of your day and putting together an amazing outfit that you love, you give yourself a little confidence and mood boost to go throughout the day with.
You’re also nicer to yourself when you get dressed. When we like how we look, we’re less critical of ourselves throughout the day. Now, I’m not saying that we should just neglect being nice to ourselves when we look in the mirror and see bedhead, but being happier with ourselves does become just a little easier when we look in the mirror and see the best version of ourselves looking back at us.
Getting dressed also improves your productivity throughout the day. When you look like a boss, you feel like a boss and you start to act like a boss. We associate our tasks with the clothes we put on. This is why we put on cozy clothes when we go to bed, fancy clothes when we go to a dinner party, and athletic clothes when we go to the gym.
Our clothes signify that we are supposed to be doing a certain task and so, by being in these clothes, we are more prepared to do that task.
If you want to be more prepared to take control of your life, you have to begin by dressing like the woman you want to become.
You have to put on clothes that represent the best, most productive, and most powerful version of yourself. This will mentally prepare you to take on your day.
But if you don’t want to take my word for it, we can look at the research. The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology of Northwestern University released a study on “enclothed cognition.” This is just a fancy way of describing how clothes affect our thinking.
This research team did a three-part experiment using a white lab coat and definitions associated with it. Through their experiment, they proved that when people physically wear white lab coats associated with doctors, instead of, say, artists, then they are able to pay greater attention to detail. The experience of physically wearing a lab coat and having that coat symbolize a career that is defined by its attention to detail makes one more likely to think and act accordingly.
Basically, what you wear greatly affects your psyche. By physically weaning something that you view as beautiful and empowering, you will feel more beautiful and more empowered to take on your day.
2. Morning Affirmations
Now, while I specify morning affirmations, you can do these at any time of day. I personally choose mornings because I feel like this helps me have a better start to my day.
Affirmations are motivating sayings that you tell yourself to boost your confidence, whether it is confidence in achieving a goal or loving yourself.
Types of affirmations can range from general encouragement such as “I am beautiful and deserve to be loved” or very specific, like “I can and will get an A on my test today.”
I have a specific affirmation for every major goal that I am working towards at that moment. I say these affirmations out loud and write them on sticky notes to hang all around my apartment until my goal is achieved.
Affirmations help to remind us to believe in ourselves.
Often times we give up on certain goals because we don’t believe that we are good enough or have what it takes to achieve our dreams. But having these daily affirmations is like having a daily victory over the little negative voices in your head.
Affirmations also help us to love ourselves just a little bit more every day.
I don’t know about you, but I can be very harsh with myself, especially when I feel like I am not progressing as fast or as well as I should be in certain areas of my life.
These remind me that I am trying my hardest and, either way, I still deserve to be loved and respected by myself and others. And if I keep working hard, I will achieve my goals.
If you are new to affirmations, a few that I believe are amazing are:
“I am beautiful and deserve to be loved and respected.”
“I am worthy of my dreams and will fight to make them come true.”
“Today is a day full of endless opportunities to become the best version of myself possible.”
You may not believe these when you first say them. But, if you stay consistent and tell yourself these truths every day, I promise you will.
3. Find an anthem
An anthem is a song or playlist that inspires you to go out and destroy your day (in the best way possible, of course). When you turn on this song or playlist, you should feel invincible.
My personal anthem is “Conqueror” by the Empire Cast featuring Estelle and Jussie Smollett. This is an amazing song that reminds me that I can overcome any obstacles and achieve my dreams.
A few other anthems that I like are:
- “Girl in Fire” by Alicia Keys
- Go Get It” by Mary Mary
- Fly” by Nicki Minaj and Rihanna
- “Good as Hell” by Lizzo
- “Roar” by Katy Perry
I like to listen to my anthem before I begin a big task, whether that is my morning workout, writing a new blog post, making a new pair of earrings, taking a big test, etc. It strengthens me to go into my task with my head held high knowing that I will do my best and everything will turn out perfectly as it is meant to be.
You should also listen to your anthem when you get self-conscious. There will be some days when you feel like your world has gone into chaos. You can’t win no matter how hard you try. That little negative voice in your head tells you to quit.
This is when you listen to your anthem.
Don’t let that little voice have victory over your powerful self. Fight back by listening to your anthem and reminding yourself that you’ve got this.
I don’t care what anyone says, we women are strong forces to be reckoned with. Sometimes, we need a little reminder of just how powerful we are. If you use these 3 simple tools – getting dressed into a cute outfit, morning affirmations, and finding your anthem, you will be equipped to encourage yourself daily and work towards becoming the best version of yourself.
